Juventus snap up Bendtner

Juventus have completed the season-long loan signing of Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner after losing out on Dimitar Berbatov.

Italian champions Juventus have been frustrated in their attempts to bring in a new striker this summer after seeing moves for Robin van Persie, Berbatov and Fernando Llorente fall through.

Arsenal were willing to loan Bendtner as he is well down the pecking order in Arsene Wenger's plans at the Emirates.

Serie A's Old Lady have lured him with the promise of regular first-team action and Champions League football.

"Bendtner is not the big name player we'd hoped to sign, but we've decided to take a chance," said club president Giueseppe Marotta.

"He's potentially a great player in the making."

Adam completes Stoke move

Stoke City have made their first move on transfer deadline day by sealing the signing of Scottish international Charlie Adam from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old former Glasgow Rangers and Blackpool midfielder put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical at the Club’s Clayton Wood Training Ground in the countdown to today’s transfer deadline.

Adam’s move was sealed before midday which hopefully means that he will be available for Saturday’s Premier League match at Wigan Athletic.

Manager Tony Pulis was delighted with the addition to his squad, not only in terms of strengthening his midfield department but bringing goals to the Club.

“It’s no secret that we’ve been looking to bring more goals to the squad and Charlie is a fantastic signing in that respect,” commented City’s manager.

“Not only will his creativity and his eye for delivering a pass be a great asset to us, he scored twelve goals for Blackpool in the Premier League two seasons ago.

“In fact, he scored 28 League goals for Blackpool over two seasons which is a fantastic return for a midfield player. We are looking for more goals from all areas of the team and his arrival gives us more competition for places in that department.”

Adam is relishing the move, saying: “I’m delighted to be here and to be given the opportunity to work with the Club, the manager and the players.”

“This Club’s on the up and it’s great to be a part of it. I hope I can help them to improve upon the success which has been achieved over the past few years.

“Hopefully, we can have a successful time together. I can do this Club proud and I’m looking forward to the chance of playing in front of their passionate supporters.”

Adam becomes City’s fifth signing of the summer and strengthens the Rangers connection following the signings of Maurice Edu and Jamie Ness, while the Potters have also recruited Michael Kightly from Wolves and Geoff Cameron from Houston Dynamo.

Capped 16 times by Scotland, Adam began his career with Glasgow Rangers before becoming Blackpool’s record £500,000 signing three years ago.

He was a key figure in Ian Holloway’s side gaining promotion to the Premier League and then made a big impact in the top-flight for the Seasiders.

That led to him making a £7 million move to Liverpool where he was a regular in their side last season and was part of the team that won the Carling Cup Final by beating Cardiff City at Wembley Stadium back in February this year.

Fulham sign Sunderland midfielder

Fulham have completed the signing of former England midfielder Kieran Richardson from Sunderland.

The 27-year-old, who can also play at left-back, has signed a three-year deal with the option of a further year.

The Cottagers have paid a reported £2m for Richardson, who joined Sunderland from Manchester United in 2007.

"Kieran is a proven top-level player, who has the versatility to play a number of positions," Fulham manager Martin Jol said.

"He will bring all-round quality which will add strength to our squad and I'm confident that he will adapt well to our style of football, and make an impact for us."

Terry misses Super Cup tonight

Chelsea will be without suspended skipper John Terry for tonight's UEFA Super Cup clash with Atletico Madrid in Monaco.

Terry travelled with the squad on Thursday but will watch from the stands as he serves the final instalment of his two-match European ban.

Marko Marin (hamstring), Yossi Benayoun (illness) and Florent Malouda were left behind in London.

Chelsea, who won the first Super Cup to be staged in Monaco in 1998, are the favourites to win the last one at the Stade Louis II before the fixture starts to move around to different European venues starting in Prague next year.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone said: "We are competitive and the game before this final (a 4-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday) gave us a good feeling and a positive attitude.

"But Chelsea are the favourites with a big budget. They've won the Champions League and on paper they are better. We want to be competitive but during the game anything can happen."

Simeone refused to compare their former player Fernando Torres, who scored 82 goals in 214 matches for Atletico, and his team's high-scoring striker Falcao.

"I'm not going to make comparisons between them. I'll talk about our side and our players - we have a great squad and Falcao is a great player and is still improving."

Sinclair signs for City

The Great Britain winger, 23, joins the Blues from Swansea and could be in the squad to face QPR on Saturday.

The Bath-born forward has a terrific season with the Swans last season and was a major factor in the South Wales side's promotion to the Premier League the season before.

"I'm just glad everything is settled and that I'm now a City player," said Sinclair.

"There were times when I thought it might not happen so I'm relieved that I'm here and I can't wait to get started.

"Playing alongside some of the best players in the world is exciting for me and when you see two Champions League fixtures against Real Madrid on the horizon, it brings it all home."

Sinclair began his career at Bristol Rovers and made his debut aged 15 before moving to Chelsea where he spent five years.

He made a succession of loan moves during his time at Stamford Bridge, playing for Plymouth, QPR, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Wigan before Swansea paid £500,000 for his services in 2010.

Sinclair was an integral part of the Great Britain Olympic squad during London 2012, playing four times and scoring once.

Spearing joins Bolton on loan

Liverpool have confirmed that midfielder Jay Spearing has joined Bolton on a season-long loan.

Sky sources revealed earlier this week that Bolton were one of five clubs interested in the highly rated 23-year-old and the Trotters have won the race for his signature.

Boss Owen Coyle is a big admirer of Spearing and sees him as a key addition to his side as he looks to mount a bid for promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Liverpool are willing to let Spearing move on as the recent captures of Joe Allen and Nuri Sahin have pushed him down the pecking order at Anfield.

Reports suggested Spearing could leave on a permanent basis, but the 23-year-old has instead opted for a loan while he weighs up his future on Merseyside.

Bolton are hoping to tie up a deal in time for Spearing to make his debut against Hull City this weekend.

Schalke signs Afellay on loan

Schalke announced on its official website that it has completed the signing of Ibrahim Afellay from Barcelona on a one-year loan deal.

The Bundesliga side was eager to add some more creativity to its squad before the closure of the summer transfer window, and Goal.com exclusively revealed on Wednesday that it had opened talks with Barca over the transfer of the Netherlands international.

Negotiations continued on Thursday and Afellay has now completed his move after passing a medical on Friday morning.

Afellay joined Barcelona from PSV in January 2011, and played an important role in the Catalans' Champions League victory that season with an assist in the semifinal tie versus Real Madrid. Nevertheless, a serious knee injury kept him out of action for the majority of the 2011-12 campaign.

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova recently revealed that Afellay was unlikely to play a big role at the Blaugranas this season, prompting the 26-year-old to seek a loan move in order to get regular first team action elsewhere.

Esteban Granero sign for QPR

QPR have completed the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old midfielder has agreed a four-year contract at Loftus Road after making 60 appearances for Los Blancos. In a statement released by the Barclays Premier League club, R's boss Mark Hughes said: "He is a great player, first and foremost. You don't play at a club like Real Madrid if you're not."

Hughes added: "He has been there from the age of nine, so this has been a huge decision for him. He is very well regarded there and for him to leave a club of that stature to come to us shows the belief he has in what we are trying to do.

"He has got great energy and is technically very gifted, as you would expect from a Real Madrid player. He is very comfortable on the ball and is an all-round excellent midfielder, which we will benefit from."

Granero told qpr.co.uk: "I'm very happy to be here. I love the passion of the English fans and from what I know QPR supporters are amongst the very best. I think QPR will continue to grow as a club and I want to be part of a very bright future here.

"When I spoke to Mark and (technical director) Mike (Rigg), as well as (chairman) Tony (Fernandes), I was convinced that I wanted to be part of this project, which has no limits.

"I am delighted to be part of this exciting chapter in the club's history. Players that have joined before me are as excited as I am about what QPR can become, one of the great teams in England."

Hughes added: "What we are doing at QPR is having an impact on players. It is probably true to say that if we had approached certain players three or four months ago about joining the club, the suggestion wouldn't have been entertained.

"But people now know we are serious and we are trying to do something different here. And that message is out there now which is why we are able to sit in front of quality players and once we are given that opportunity, we feel we have a good story to tell them.

"That's why players are deciding that QPR is a great option."

Capital One Cup third round draw

Liverpool will begin their defence of the Capital One Cup with a trip to West Brom in the third round.

Baggies boss Steve Clarke was assistant manager to Kenny Dalgish as the Reds lifted the cup in Wembley in February with victory over Cardiff.

Manchester United also face top-flight opposition in their bid for silverware, with Alan Pardew's Newcastle set to visit Old Trafford - the first game out of the hat in tonight's draw.

Manchester City host Aston Villa while Coventry are faced with a daunting trip to Arsenal.

European champions Chelsea host recently-relegated opposition in the form of Wolves, who were the last side to book their place in the third round with victory over Northampton.

Andre Villas-Boas' Tottenham make the long trip to Brunton Park and Carlisle, while Everton cross the Pennines to take on Leeds.

QPR and Reading face off at Loftus Road and West Ham welcome Wigan in the two remaining all Premier League encounters.

Capital One Cup third round draw:

Man Utd v Newcastle

Man City v Aston Villa

MK Dons v Sunderland

West Brom v Liverpool

Crawley v Swansea

QPR v Reading

Norwich v Doncaster

Bradford v Burton

Preston v Middlesbrough

Arsenal v Coventry

Southampton v Sheff Wed

Chelsea v Wolves

Carlisle v Tottenham

Swindon v Burnley

West Ham v Wigan

Leeds v Everton

Lopez pleased with Betis move

Real Betis has confirmed the signing of former Villarreal fullback Angel Lopez on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old left the Yellow Submarine after its relegation in the northern summer and has been without a club ever since.

He passed his medical with the Seville club earlier on Thursday and subsequently posted a picture on Twitter of himself signing his contract.

The picture was accompanied by the words: "Excited to get to a big club! I'm looking forward to it. Mucho Betis!"

Angel, who won five senior caps for Spain in 2006 and 2007, missed much of last season with a torn cruciate ligament but his new club confirmed: "Angel arrives in optimum fitness, offering very satisfactory data in the medical examination."

He has played over 200 games in the Primera Division during his career and can operate in either fullback position or as a holding midfielder.

Andy Carroll makes loan move

Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll has joined West Ham on a season-long loan, the clubs have confirmed.

Carroll's position at Anfield has been the subject of considerable speculation since new manager Brendan Rodgers took charge earlier in the summer.

The 23-year-old had also been linked with a return to former club Newcastle but the Hammers have now acquired his services for the 2012-13 season.

A brief statement from Liverpool read: "Liverpool Football Club can confirm that Andy Carroll has joined West Ham United on a season-long loan.

"The striker will spend the whole of 2012-13 with Sam Allardyce's team."

Carroll joined the Reds in a club record £35million deadline day deal in January 2011 but has failed to establish himself on Merseyside.

Reports that he was poised to move to Upton Park grew during the evening and he was conspicuous by his absence as Liverpool faced Hearts in a Europa League qualifier tonight.

Carroll scored nine goals for the Reds last season but did not command a regular starting place.

He began to impress towards the end of the campaign and shone at Euro 2012 with England but he still did not appear to feature in Rodgers' plans.

Carroll told West Ham's official website: "It's great to be here at West Ham and all signed up - I just can't wait to get started now.

"I want to be playing games and obviously hoping to score some goals. I know the manager well and some of the lads, so it is nice for me to come to a place where I know people.

"I'm hoping to add a lot of goals and create a few chances. I know Sam from Newcastle and he was a massive reason for me coming. When I worked with him at Newcastle it was great so it was a no-brainer really."

Allardyce added: "I think for all parties this is a great signing. Andy is an all-round footballer, but because he is 6ft 3in and one of his strengths is his aerial power, everybody dismisses the ability he possesses on the floor.

"Hopefully he can score goals for us and we will be in a very good position at the end of the year in the Premier League."

France recall Diaby for World Cup qualifiers

France coach Didier Deschamps on Wednesday recalled midfielder Abou Diaby, who has not played for the national team for over a year, for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Finland on September 7 and at home against Belarus four days later.

Injury-prone Diaby last featured with Les Bleus in a friendly against Poland in June last year and missed the European Championship because of a calf injury.

The 26-year-old, regarded for years as one of the best French midfielders, has won 15 caps.

"There always will be questions about his physical fragility but he prepared well, he played 90 minutes (for Arsenal) last weekend. He is on the right path," Deschamps told a news conference.

"His potential is huge. He is a very interesting player. He's also 26, more mature, which is crucial for a midfielder."

Paris St Germain winger Jeremy Menez returns after he served a one-match ban for insulting the referee in the Euro 2012 quarter-final defeat to eventual champions Spain.

"His suspension is over, this is ancient history. I am only interested in the future and he can be part of it. It is up to him to understand what he can do and cannot," Deschamps said.

Deschamps, who replaced Laurent Blanc, in July, left out Newcastle forward Hatem Ben Arfa, who received a warning when he was summoned to a disciplinary hearing along with Menez, Manchester City's Samir Nasri and Stade Rennes' Yann Mvila after the Euros.

Deschamps had been at odds with Ben Arfa when he was his coach at Olympique Marseille.

"I am in a new position, I am not his everyday coach anymore. I know him, as a person and as a player. If I had no intention to call him someday, I would not include him in the provisional list," Deschamps said.

Nasri is serving a three-match ban for his conduct during Euro 2012, while Mvila, who received a warning at the disciplinary hearing, was not selected.

France have been drawn in qualifying group H, also containing defending champions Spain and Georgia.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Mickael Landreau (Lille), Hugo Lloris (Olympique Lyon), Steve Mandanda (Olympique Marseille)

Defenders: Gael Clichy (Manchester City), Patrice Evra (Manchester United), Christophe Jallet (Paris St Germain) Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal), Adil Rami (Valence), Anthony Reveillere (Olympique Lyon), Mamadou Sakho (Paris St Germain), Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (Montpellier)

Midfielders: Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle), Etienne Capoue (Toulouse), Abou Diaby (Arsenal), Maxime Gonalons (Olympique Lyon), Blaise Matuidi (Paris St Germain), Rio Mavuba (Lille), Mathieu Valbuena (Olympique Marseille)

Strikers: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Olivier Giroud (Arsenal), Bafetimbi Gomis (Olympique Lyon), Jeremy Menez (Paris St Germain), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

Marseille sign Lucas Mendes

Marseille has signed defender Lucas Mendes on a four-year deal from Brazilian club Coritiba.

The French club, which is top of the league after three matches, said on its website Thursday that the Brazilian successfully passed a medical. No financial details were given.

The 22-year-old Mendes can play at either left back or centre half, the position he last played for Coritiba.

Mendes, who played 139 matches in a four-year spell with Coritiba and scored two goals, says "it was my dream to play in Europe and I thank Marseille for giving me the opportunity."

Marseille has recruited modestly as it desperately tries to reduce debts. It recently sold France midfielder Alou Diarra to West Ham and Spanish right back Cesar Azpilicueta to Chelsea.

Jermain Defoe signs new Tottenham contract

Spurs striker Jermain Defoe has out an end to the uncertainty surrounding his future by signing a new contract with the north London club.

Defoe's place at Spurs appeared to be in doubt after the Premier League side were linked with a number of other strikers, but the 29-year-old has decided to stay at White Hart Lane.

Shortly after being called up to the England squad for their qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, the striker tweeted:

"Fantastic week signed my new contract at spurs & meeting up with England on Monday for 2 important games #goalsgoalsgoals."

Richard Wright joins Man City

Manchester City have signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Richard Wright on a free transfer on a one-year deal.

The 34-year-old was released by Preston North End at the start of the off-season just gone, after only signing for the club in July.

Wright, who has made two international appearances for England, joined Roberto Mancini's side as the Italian looks to bolster his options between the sticks following the release of Stuart Taylor.

The keeper is expected to be third choice at the Etihad Stadium behind starter Joe Hart and back-up stopper Costel Pantilimon.

Wright endured a tough time with the Gunners following a six-million-pound move to the club in 2001 from Ipswich and was shipped out to Everton after just one season.

He has since had further spells with West Ham, Southampton and Sheffield United.

Kaboul out for four months

Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul has been ruled out until the festive period after undergoing successful knee surgery.

The centre-back played the full 90 minutes of Spurs' defeat by Newcastle United on the opening day of the season but was then absent for the draw against West Brom.

France international Kaboul, who missed Euro 2012 with a knee injury, has now confirmed he has had an operation and will require up to four months of rehabilitation.

The news will come as a setback for Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas but he does have cover after summer signing Jan Vertonghen impressed on his debut against West Brom.

Kaboul said on Twitter: "Morning all, surgery done with success. Now looking forward for my rehab. I thank you all for your great support as usual!#comingbackstronger.

"Sorry I forgot to mention how long...Should be 4 months."

It remains to be seen whether Kaboul's injury alters Tottenham's decision to put Michael Dawson, who was wanted by Queens Park Rangers, up for sale.

Villas-Boas also has 20-year-old Steven Caulker as another potential central defensive option ahead of Saturday's Premier League game against Norwich City at White Hart Lane.

Hoops close in on Granero

QPR's bid to bring Real Madrid's Esteban Granero to Loftus Road has edged a step closer after they agreed a fee for the midfielder with the Spanish champions.

Acquiring Granero would be a huge coup for the west Londoners, who have been the busiest of all the Barclays Premier League clubs in the summer window. The 25-year-old has impressed on the few chances he has had at the Bernabeu after moving from Getafe in July 2009.

The deal to sign Granero is subject to the player agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

Should he do so, then he will join the likes of goalkeeper Julio Cesar and midfielders Park Ji-sung and Junior Hoilett in signing for Mark Hughes' men since the end of last season.

Another possible player coming in is Marseille's Cameroon international Stephane Mbia.

Mbia, who can play at centre-half or a defensive midfield role, claims he is close to a move to Rangers after snubbing a switch to Fenerbahce.

Having won Ligue 1 in 2010 and three successive Coupe de la Ligue titles since moving from Rennes, he admits he is leaving with a heavy heart but is relishing his new challenge.

"Marseille is still in my heart," he said. "I won my first titles here. I have chosen Queens Park Rangers despite a last-minute bid from Fenerbahce."

There was no comment from QPR over Mbia when contacted by Press Association Sport.

Pearce snubs Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling

Stuart Pearce has overlooked Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling for his latest England Under-21 squad.

Jamaica-born Sterling, 17, has made a big splash at Anfield this season, and starred in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

But while his team-mates Jordan Henderson, Martin Kelly and Jonjo Shelvey are in the squad, Sterling is in the Under-19s instead.

Henderson is expected to captain the Young Lions for their European Championship qualifying double-header against Azerbaijan and Norway.

Victory in both Group 8 games next month will guarantee Pearce’s team a place in the decisive play-off in October.

Pearce also handed maiden call-ups for Blackpool winger Tom Ince and Leicester defender Ben Marshall.

Squad: Ben Amos, Declan Rudd, Jason Steele; Ryan Bennett, Steven Caulker, Nathaniel Clyne, Craig Dawson, Martin Kelly, Ben Marshall, Danny Rose, Adam Smith; Jordan Henderson, Tom Ince, Henri Lansbury, Jason Lowe, Josh McEachran, Jack Rodwell, Jonjo Shelvey, Wilfried Zaha; Nathan Delfouneso, Marvin Sordell, Connor Wickham, Martyn Waghorn.

Sinclair on his way to Manchester City after fee was agreed

Manchester City have finally agreed a deal with Swansea to bring Scott Sinclair to the Etihad Stadium, with the winger set for a medical at the club on Thursday.

Sinclair has been linked with a move to the Premier League champions throughout the summer but reports suggested the transfer had fallen through earlier this week when the two clubs failed to agree a fee.

It was thought City's previous £6.2million offer was not enough to tempt Swansea to part ways with their star man, who has a year remaining on his contract in South Wales.

However, that obstacle appears to have been cleared to pave the way for the 23-year-old winger to link up with the big-spending club.

Sinclair, who scored 27 times for the Swans in the 2010/11 season before adding a further eight goals last term as they finished mid-table on their top-flight return, will undergo a medical at City on Thursday ahead of completing his move.

The winger is set to fill the gap in Roberto Mancini's squad vacated by England international Adam Johnson, who recently departed for Sunderland.

He is poised to become only the second signing of the summer for City, who have also brought in Jack Rodwell from Everton.

Swansea have already moved to line up his replacement for Sinclair, having agreed a fee with Valenciato bring Spanish winger Pablo Hernandez to the Liberty Stadium.

Liverpool eager to offload duo

Liverpool are ready to sell Andy Carroll to West Ham United and Charlie Adam to Stoke in a bid to finance one last push to sign Arsenal forward Theo Walcott.

West Ham have indicated they are still interested in a last-minute deal for Carroll, even though he has made it clear he does not want to leave Anfield.

The two clubs, though, have agreed a £20 million package should the England striker be convinced to change his mind.

That deal would see West Ham take Carroll on a season-long loan initially, paying his £80,000-a-week wages in full, and then sign him permanently for £17 million if they avoid relegation.

The 23-year-old has been told by manager Brendan Rodgers that he will only be a squad player if he stays at Anfield.

Rodgers has given the same message to midfielder Adam, with Stoke understood to have made a bid of around £4 million on Wednesday.

Liverpool's tight financial constraints mean that Rodgers has to sell before he can buy.

"I don't think we are in a position to have £35 million players as third choice strikers," Rodgers said in reference to Carroll's situation.

"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Andy has been a cover player for us in the opening two games."

Walcott had looked likely to leave Arsenal after rejecting a new contract with only a year to run on his current deal but the forward has since held private discussions with manager Arsene Wenger over his future.

But Liverpool, who have asked to be kept informed of Walcott's potential availability, are still considering a late bid.

Asked if the club could afford to buy without selling first, Rodgers said: "No. Not at this stage. Obviously, I have seen a lot of the links and it is great that those players would want to come here.

"But the reality is that we are not in a position to do those sorts of deals."

Vilanova proud of his team

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has hailed the character of his side, despite their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa.

A poor start for Barca saw them fall two goals behind early on at Santiago Bernabeu, before Adriano was shown a straight red card to leave them on the brink of defeat after only half an hour played in the second leg on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi reduced the arrears with a free kick on the stroke of half-time, and Barca recovered to push Real during the second half, ultimately drawing 4-4 on aggregate and losing on the away goals rule.

"The first half was not like us, but the second half was one of my proudest nights with the team," Vilanova said.

"With 10 men we controlled the game and had five clear chances. We never sit back, defend with 10 and try to hit on the counter. With our players, we always play the same way and did so in the second half."

Vilanova also offered his compliments to Real for their victory, saying: "I would like to congratulate Madrid on winning the (Supercopa) title."

In the 221st meeting between the two sides, Real's triumph sees them move ahead of Barcelona 88-87 in the all-time ledger for Clasico victories.

Madrid wins Supercopa on away goals

Real Madrid secured its first Spanish Supercopa since 2008 on away goals after a narrow 2-1 victory over arch-rival Barcelona in the second leg at the Bernabeu.

The host had failed to win in its last seven home meetings with Barca but went about ending that record early on with goals in the first 20 minutes from Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The visitor was then reduced to 10 men as Adriano was shown a straight red card for denying Ronaldo a clear goalscoring opportunity, but it regained its composure and was brought back into the game by a stunning free-kick from Lionel Messi just before half-time.

Chances continued to come at both ends after the break but Real failed to make its man advantage count and was nearly made to pay as Messi shot just inches wide deep into stoppage-time.

Real had failed to win any of its previous three games this season but it did not seem like a side lacking in confidence as it stormed out of the traps early on.

Higuain should have opened the scoring on seven minutes when his low effort across Victor Valdes was well blocked by the goalkeeper, but the Argentinian was gifted his goal only two minutes later by compatriot Javier Mascherano as the Barca defender misjudged a long ball forward from Pepe and allowed Higuain to run through and this time finish low beyond Valdes.

And it was two just nine minutes later as Ronaldo pounced on an error this time by Gerard Pique. The Portuguese brilliantly back-flicked the ball into his path and, despite a poor second touch, his powerful shot rebounded in off Valdes' body.

The chances continued to come for Real as Valdes again denied Higuain from a narrow angle before Pepe had a header controversially ruled out for a push on Mascherano.

Part of Barca's disorganisation at the back could possibly be put down to a late change in the starting line-up as the injured Dani Alves had to be replaced by Jordi Alba with Adriano moving to right-back, and the Brazilian's torrid evening only lasted 27 minutes as he hauled down Ronaldo when he seemed set to break free on Valdes once more.

After another unsettling five-minute period for the Catalan side, new coach Tito Vilanova eventually introduced Martin Montoya for Alexis Sanchez and a return to four at the back seemed to offer the visitor some comfort as it began to make an impression on the game.

Montoya was inches away from converting a vicious low cross from Andres Iniesta before Messi did eventually halve the deficit moments before the interval with an incredible swerving free-kick from 30 yards.

Ronaldo nearly responded with a long-range effort himself that flew just past and Angel Di Maria also shot narrowly wide as Madrid ended the half threatening a third.

However, at the start of the second period, it was Barca's tiki-taka that began to dictate play as the pace of the game dropped markedly.

Pedro very nearly scored a carbon copy of his goal in the first leg as Mascherano's perfectly-weighted pass saw him through on goal but his prodded finish did not have enough power to get through Iker Casillas' legs and the Spain captain collected at the second attempt.

Sami Khedira then nearly restored Real's two-goal cushion but was denied by another fine Valdes save at the end of a brilliant run.

Barca remained dangerous, though, and another brilliant piece of play from Messi released Alba through on goal, but he just over-ran the ball as he rounded Casillas and was eventually crowded out.

Higuain should have given Real breathing space with 11 minutes remaining but he hit the outside of the post with only Valdes to beat and that miss nearly cost his side as Barca came desperately close to equalising in stoppage-time.

Firstly, Montoya was denied by a solid save from Casillas before Messi seemed destined to hand Barca the cup as he found space on his favoured left side just outside the area but the ball slipped just wide and Real clung on for its first Supercopa title in four years.

Sydney FC expects reply from Del Piero on Saturday

Sydney FC has made its offer to Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero and expects to hear by Saturday whether he will agree to join the Sky Blues.

The door opened for the Sky Blues to make perhaps the most audacious signing in A-League history after marquee player Nicky Carle left the club for UAE side Baniyas earlier this week.

Sydney FC's CEO Tony Pignata seemed confident is hopeful his club presented an attractive package to the six-time Serie A winner (plus two more the club were stripped of due to the Calciopoli betting scandal).

"Overnight we had two video conferences lasting about two hours discussing the possibility of bringing Alessandro Del Piero to Sydney FC for the 2012-13 season," Pignata said.

"Alessandro Del Piero is one of the true legends of football and there is no doubt that if he was to come to Sydney FC it would be huge, not only for our club and the Sydney football community, but for the whole A-League.

"We spoke about football, as well as the Sydney lifestyle and the ability for him to leave a lasting legacy in the game. We presented him with what we think is a good package and we should get an answer within 48 hours."

Swiss club Sion is thought to be the main rival to Sydney FC in capturing Del Piero's signature. Del Piero would join former Azzuri team-mate Gennaro Gattuso if he joins Sion.

Berbatov snubs juve for Fulham

Giuseppe Marotta says Manchester United's Dimitar Berbatov has turned down the chance to sign for Juventus and will instead join Fulham.

Bulgarian forward Berbatov had been expected to join Turin club Juve after talks over a move to Fiorentina broke down.

However, according to Juve director Marotta, the 31-year-old has elected to link up with his former Tottenham coach Martin Jol at Craven Cottage.

Berbatov played under Jol during the Dutchman's time in charge of Spurs, and the former Bayer Leverkusen man now looks set to re-join his old coach in west London after falling out of favour at Old Trafford.

Marotta told Sky Italia: "We have contacted Manchester United about five pm when we have known that Berbatov rejected Fiorentina's offer. Then we have contacted player's agent and he said to us that Berbatov had a offer from his former coach to join Fulham.

"We only approached Manchester United and got close to the player after discovering he had turned down Fiorentina. There was an offer from Fulham, but he wanted to evaluate our proposal too and give a definitive response tonight.

"Berbatov wanted to stay in England because of his family, it's a life choice not a matter of money. He was in Munich because his wife was born in Munich. Juventus acted with transparency and fairness"

Both Juventus and Fiorentina are expected to turn their attentions to Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, and Marotta has confirmed the Dane is on the radar of last season's Serie A champions.

He added: "Bendtner is an available player and we have evaluated him, but we cannot say that we're about to conclude the deal.

"Fernando Llorente could remain an objective, seeing as his contract expires in 2013. When the rules allow us to make an approach, then we'll see how it ends. At the moment it is a dream to think he'll play for us."

Villa sign defender Bennett

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of defender Joe Bennett from Middlesbrough on a four-year deal.

The England Under-21 international is Paul Lambert's fifth new signing of the summer, following the arrival of Ron Vlaar, Matt Lowton, Karim El Ahmadi and Brett Holman.

"Joe's a really good player, young and hungry to succeed, and he's exactly the type of player we want here at the football club," Lambert said.

"There's no doubt in my mind that he will thrive in this environment and he fits in exactly with what we are trying to build here."

Bennett said: "I am really excited to have joined a massive club in Aston Villa and I'm eager to fight for a starting place and get in the team.

"It's up to the manager to pick the team, of course, but it would be great to go back to the north east this weekend and make my debut against Newcastle at St James' Park."

Walcott set to stay at Arsenal

Theo Walcott looks set to stay at Arsenal after holding showdown talks with Arsene Wenger at the club's training ground.

It is understood Walcott did not back down over his contract demands but gave assurances he definitely wanted to stay with the Gunners in the long-term.

Arsenal had been braced for the prospect of selling Walcott before the transfer window closes on Friday but they are now happy to continue negotiations beyond then and effectively risk losing him for nothing next summer.

That is a scenario the club have not been prepared to tolerate in the past, having decided to sell a host of big name players in recent years as they have entered the final year of their contract.

The difference with Walcott is that there is genuine hope an agreement can be reached, although how Arsenal and manager Wenger would react to a big-money bid in the next 48 hours remains to be seen.

Walcott, who has been valued between £12million and £15million, has already been linked with Liverpool this summer.

Reports suggest Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City are also interested in adding the England star to their ever-increasing arsenal of former Gunners after seeing a bid for Swansea's Scott Sinclair rejected.

It is understood Arsenal offered Walcott a contract worth around £75,000-a-week, reportedly for the next five years.

But the player himself is after a better deal - nearer £100,000-a-week according to reports, while he is also seeking assurances about his position in the team.

Losing Walcott would be viewed by many as another huge blow to Arsenal, who sold captain Robin van Persie to Manchester United earlier this month.

Alex Song quickly followed by joining Barcelona, who signed Cesc Fabregas from the Gunners last summer, which also saw Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri move to City.

Walcott was one of Van Persie's main providers last season as the Dutchman notched 37 goals, with Walcott himself scoring 11.

He has often been criticised for a lack of consistency at both club and international level and Arsenal team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was preferred by England manager Roy Hodgson at this summer's European Championship.

Walcott, who joined the Gunners from Southampton as a 16-year-old in 2006, started their home game with Sunderland on the opening day of the season but was left on the bench for Sunday's match at Stoke, eventually coming on after 72 minutes in what was their second straight goalless draw.

A lack of goals has seen Wenger's summer signings come under scrutiny but one of them, Olivier Giroud, has denied he is feeling the pressure of helping fill the shoes of Van Persie.

"I'm not the kind of person to put negative pressure on my shoulders," the France striker told Arsenal Player.

"It's true that Robin had a very, very good season last year but I'm not here to make everyone forget about him or to replace him.

"I only want to take my place, gradually make my mark and win over the hearts of the fans.

"In our way, we are two different players. He spent eight years here and had a very good season last year.

"I need a little adjustment time but I hope to make my mark as quickly as possible. And I hope to score a lot of goals."

Giroud, who signed for Arsenal after a prolific campaign with Montpellier, claimed playing in front of fellow new boy Santi Cazorla would help him adapt.

"It's the same gameplan that we had at Montpellier and the same plan I played with in the French national team, with a number 10 like Cazorla behind me," he said.

"It's the same tactical plan I am used to so I am not lost, I know how to play in relation to my partners and it's just a little adjustment that is needed to make things automatic on the pitch."

QPR sign Julio Cesar

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar is to join QPR on a four-year deal, subject to receiving international clearance and being granted a visa.

The 32-year-old has agreed a contract until the summer of 2016, ending his seven-year stint with Inter Milan.

Cesar, who has won 64 caps for his country, told www.qpr.co.uk: "I'm so happy and excited to be here.

"The ambition of this club was presented to me by the chairman and the coach and I couldn't have been more impressed.

"The desire to achieve things at this club is clear for everyone to see and I wanted to be part of that. I have come here to compete for the shirt and give my all."

Cesar, who won the Champions League and five Serie A titles with Inter, was spotted yesterday at Loftus Road, where he was discussing terms ahead of Rangers' 3-0 Capital One Cup second-round victory over Walsall.

Manager Mark Hughes was thrilled to add a goalkeeper of Cesar's quality to his squad.

"It's fantastic that we've been able to attract a keeper of such outstanding ability to the club," the Welshman said on www.qpr.co.uk.

"When the opportunity to sign a player of his quality presents itself, you have to act quickly and we've managed to get the deal done.

"It was always my intention to bring two goalkeepers to the club this summer and now we've got fantastic competition in that department."

Hughes added: "He's an outstanding individual, as well as being an outstanding player.

"Not only will we benefit from his ability, but we'll also benefit from his experience and winning mentality."

Cesar, who will wear the number 33 shirt, is likely to be in contention for the club's next home game against Chelsea - after the international break - on September 15.

And the South American cannot wait to get started, adding: "The English Premier League is the best division in the world.

"Everyone wants to play here and I am no different. Now I just want to give my all to the club and show the fans what I am capable of.

"This is a really exciting move for me and I can't wait to get going."

Barton desperate to leave QPR

QPR midfielder Joey Barton admits that it is best for him to leave the club after arriving in Marseille for negotiations over a season-long loan.

The 29-year-old has been banished to the reserves after receiving a 12-match ban for being sent off in the final Premier League match of last season against Manchester City.

And with manager Mark Hughes having made it clear the former England international has no future at Loftus Road, Barton admitted his disappointment at the way he has been treated.

"It's not great position for me to be in as a professional when you feel unwanted, unloved and you haven't got a shared number never mind a locker at the training ground," he told Sky Sports News.

"It's not an ideal scenario and I don't want to play it out that way. Hopefully there's some compromise.

"Things don't always work out. This is football. This is the unpretty side that not a lot of people get to see.

"Sometimes people level a number of things at footballers, but there's not many other jobs where the industry is so volatile and you can go from being captain of the club, given thousands of promises when a club want to sign you, to all of a sudden when your face doesn't fit or when someone decides they don't want you.

"Sometimes from your own stupidity. All of a sudden you've got to relocate your family and you're deemed not part of what it is."

Barton tweeted a picture of himself on his way to France on Wednesday morning as he bids to seal a move away from west London.

The deal had appeared to be off on Tuesday when Barton revealed on Twitter he was 'heartbroken' and feared he would once again be forced to train with the reserves.

But before departing for talks, the former Manchester City and Newcastle United player seemed optimistic about his chances of moving to Marseille.

"I'm going there with an open mind. I'll speak to Marseille and see what it's about," he said.

"I really want to join there, it's a club that will suit me, it appeals to me for the sheer size of it.

"It's not going exactly to plan at QPR, it's a difference of opinion. Hopefully we can find a compromise - the alternative, I think, is that I go."

Barton has trained with League Two side Fleetwood Town this summer after being told he has no future at Loftus Road, and the controversial former England international admits it is in his interests to move on.

"I'm not really part of it," he said of the dispute between himself and QPR.

"I've got the best union in the world protecting me and I'm well within my rights to sit for the next three years and pick my money up, but that isn't me.

"I just have to approach it short term with the view that the best scenario, certainly for me personally, and I think for QPR and probably Mark Hughes, is that I'm out of his hair for a little bit.

"It's not good, I don't think any manager wants a player at the training ground that he doesn't want there."
