Afellay revealed that a move to Arsenal fail

Ibrahim Afellay will not be trying to prove Arsenal made a mistake by failing to sign him when Schalke visit Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.

The on-loan Dutchman claims he was wanted by Arsene Wengerduring his previous spell at PSV Eindhoven and parent clubBarcelona but a fee could not be agreed.

Afellay will therefore be a visiting player in London for the UEFA Champions League Group B match, when Schalke will aim to close a two-point gap to Arsenal at the top of the table.

But the midfielder is not on a one-man mission to make a statement of his ability to the Gunners and is instead only focused on ensuring his club avoid losing.

Afellay told Sky Sports: "Arsenal were interested in me in the last few years at PSV and Barcelona. But, finally, it was not possible to close the subject.

"I believe that money was the difference between the clubs.

"This match is not personal revenge for me. I do not need to demonstrate anything against Arsenal. But our objective is to leave London without defeat.

"The scouts of Wenger have always liked my work but have never made the decisive move. But this is not a trauma for me."

Schalke signs Afellay on loan

Schalke announced on its official website that it has completed the signing of Ibrahim Afellay from Barcelona on a one-year loan deal.

The Bundesliga side was eager to add some more creativity to its squad before the closure of the summer transfer window, and Goal.com exclusively revealed on Wednesday that it had opened talks with Barca over the transfer of the Netherlands international.

Negotiations continued on Thursday and Afellay has now completed his move after passing a medical on Friday morning.

Afellay joined Barcelona from PSV in January 2011, and played an important role in the Catalans' Champions League victory that season with an assist in the semifinal tie versus Real Madrid. Nevertheless, a serious knee injury kept him out of action for the majority of the 2011-12 campaign.

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova recently revealed that Afellay was unlikely to play a big role at the Blaugranas this season, prompting the 26-year-old to seek a loan move in order to get regular first team action elsewhere.
