Vidic ready for international break

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic hopes to make the most of the international break with some work on the training ground.

Vidic made the decision to retire from international duty with Serbia when they failed to qualify for Euro 2012.

The defender plans to make the most of the break from Premier League action in order to work hard on the training ground, while most of his team-mates will be with their respective countries.

The 31-year-old defender returned to action in December following a serious knee problem and has been carefully managed since by boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who has chosen to rest Vidic on occasion.

The defender now hopes to make the most of the international break without having to worry about preparing for a fixture this weekend.

"The international break is good for me," Nemanja told MUTV. "During the 10 days, I can work on my individual stuff like fitness and other technical things.



"It is also always good to have a few days for yourself. When you have lots of games, like we have recently, you just manage yourself until the next one and you don't work on yourself that much. Sometimes it is nice to have these days to work on yourself."

Vidic set to return, Nani blow

Nemanja Vidic is back in training and could make his Manchester United return next week, but Nani is unlikely to play again this year.

Serbia international defender Vidic could make a surprise comeback in United's Champions League tie at home to Cluj on Wednesday.



The 31-year-old has been out since September after undergoing knee surgery but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Friday his captain had returned to training and an appearance against Cluj at Old Trafford was a possibility.



"It would be nice for him to play on Wednesday," said Ferguson.



"We are not afraid of that."



However, there was less good news about Portugal winger Nani, who has been missing since the beginning of the month with a hamstring injury.



"Nani is going to be out for a longer spell, possibly another four or five weeks," said Ferguson.



The United manager also confirmed Antonio Valencia would miss Saturday's trip to Reading with a hip injury.

Ferguson: Vidic was never fit for United

Nemanja Vidic was never fit after seemingly recovering from cruciate ligament damage, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Manchester United captain returned this season from the injury he suffered in December of last year but now faces another two months on the sidelines following further surgery.



And Ferguson admits he was not entirely surprised by the chain of events.



"I don't think he was ever 100 per cent," said the United boss.



"I noticed a couple of times in training that he was limping a little bit. Then he started feeling tightness in his knee.



"He wanted to carry on and in that situation that is what tough guys can do.



"Obviously the main operation was to correct the cruciate but when you do cruciates there is always the danger that the cartilage or meniscus is damaged also and that was the case."



He added: "The difficulty is for our medical staff to make a decision as to when players are ready to come back.



"The worst that can happen is if you try and rush them back they get a training injury.



"That is unthinkable nowadays and that is what we are trying to avoid."
